Michael Wilbon, the longtime ESPN sports commentator and co-host of Pardon the Interruption (PTI), is taking an indefinite leave of absence from his television duties as he deals with multiple health issues.

The 67-year-old sports journalist shared the news in a statement posted on social media, explaining that his recent health struggles have made it necessary to step away from his regular responsibilities at ESPN and ABC.

Wilbon emphasized that his decision does not mean he is retiring. Instead, he described the break as a temporary step to focus on his health and recovery.

“This isn’t a retirement,” Wilbon wrote, comparing his situation to a trip to the injured list. He added that he hopes the absence will not be an extended one.

The announcement has drawn attention from sports fans who have followed his work for decades, particularly his partnership with fellow journalist Tony Kornheiser.

Michael Wilbon Opens Up About His Health Problems

In his statement, Wilbon acknowledged that he has experienced multiple health issues over recent months. He said he had been encouraged by medical professionals and people close to him, including Kornheiser, to take time away from work earlier.

According to Wilbon, those around him had noticed concerning signs in recent years and recommended that he slow down. However, he continued with his demanding schedule.

He now says his priority is concentrating on his personal well-being and following the advice of medical professionals.

Although Wilbon has not publicly identified all the conditions behind his current health problems, his announcement confirms that the situation requires an indefinite break.

His medical history also includes a heart attack in 2008. More recently, during a discussion about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and blood clot treatment, Wilbon revealed that he was taking blood thinner medication and undergoing additional medical tests.

However, no official statement has established that his current leave is connected to a specific diagnosis.

ESPN Supports Wilbon’s Decision to Step Away

Wilbon has been an important part of ESPN’s sports coverage for many years. He began co-hosting Pardon the Interruption with Kornheiser in October 2001, and the program recently marked its 25th anniversary.

The two journalists became known for their energetic debates, sharp opinions and discussions about major sports stories.

Besides PTI, Wilbon has also worked as a studio analyst for ESPN’s NBA coverage and ABC broadcasts.

ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro expressed the network’s support following the announcement. He described Wilbon as an important member of the ESPN team and said the company would stand behind him throughout his recovery.

Pitaro also made clear that Wilbon could take as much time away as necessary and would be welcomed back whenever he felt ready.

For now, fans will have to wait for further updates about his condition and possible return. Wilbon has expressed hope that the break will help him feel much better and eventually return to the familiar television partnership with Kornheiser.
